Geolocation The conversion of paper maps is complex. We aim to provide access to maps and plans in the first instance through a digital surrogate rather than to the original record. Detailed descriptions of the first 5,000 entries have been published in the 'Descriptive List of Plans in the Scottish Record Office' four volumes by Ian H Adams and Loretta R Timperley. However, we do still sell a limited reproduction range of 1 inch to 1 mile maps revised from the late 1800s and published in the early years of the 1900s. Only six individual plans or one bound set of plans plan book can be included on a plan access request submitted to the Historical Search Room. Copying of Maps and Plans It may not be possible to obtain copies of plans which are physically unsuitable for copying, for example those in poor condition or too large.

At the moment each map can be viewed by clicking on the appropriate box on an online map, they plan to undertake further work to join many of the maps together to create a single scrollable historic map of the whole country this summer.

They were subsequently updated regularly for urban or rapidly changing areas from 1914 to the 1940s. It is an artificial collection of around 170,000 topographical plans, marine charts, architectural and engineering drawings for convenience, the term 'plan' will be used to refer to all categories. The plans collection is a very diverse one. From 1925 duplicate plans could be also recorded along with the sasines or, from 1934, recorded with the deeds themselves. The vast majority of the plans are topographical in nature, and we have the largest collection of original maps and plans of Scotland. We have digitised selected items from the collection.

The Ordnance Survey six-inch mapping system is the most detailed map scale to cover England and Wales and can record most man-made features in the landscape such as roads, railways, fields, fencing, streams and buildings. The maps are immensely valuable for local and family history, allowing most features in the landscape to be shown. Collections which relate to west of Scotland shipbuilders are held elsewhere. The maps can be viewed over time for each place of interest. Most of the manuscript plans are unique, while many of the engraved and lithographed plans have only survived in limited quantities.

Comparison layers A small selection of the many online map providers is available to choose a comparator from. Most date from 1750 or later, as cartography in Scotland only began to flourish during the 18th century under the influence of agricultural improvement, when landowners employed surveyors to map their estates. Additionally it has other , principally for Scotland, which may be of interest. Our holdings cover all parts of the globe, and range from early atlases and manuscript maps to current digital mapping.
